Legal ethics and the law of lawyering encompass much more than just "the etiquette of the profession". With the explosion of regulation of the legal profession, the ethics lawyer has become an essential specialty within the profession. Legal ethics and professional responsibility are woven into the daily life of every lawyer and every potential lawyer, whether he or she recognizes it or not. This is the "perpetual rendezvous" that the court in McClure was referring to.
As government regulation of lawyers has increased, it has incorporated the "law of lawyering." As the profession has become more risky and stressful, it has also incorporated addressing the professional responsibility and risk management issues raised by disillusionment, career burnout, depression and substance abuse. As business competition has increased among lawyers and firms, legal ethics has also come to include an understanding of the tension between business and professional values in the practice of the law.
In the last thirty years, the ethics lawyer has emerged as a distinct specialty within the profession as the many aspects of "Legal Ethics" have become too complex for individual lawyers to master. Over the last 21 years, David Cameron Carr has become an expert ethics lawyer with a broad spectrum of extensive and specialized experience in this area of the law.
